Nalanda University, a marvel of ancient India, was the world’s first residential educational institution. It wasn’t just a hub of learning but also a bridge connecting diverse civilizations and cultures. Situated in Rajgir, Bihar, Nalanda served as a beacon of knowledge from the 5th century to the 12th century, leaving an indelible mark on education, research, and intellectual growth.

Establishment and Historical Significance

  • Nalam: Knowledge

  • Da: To give


During its peak, Nalanda attracted scholars not only from the Indian subcontinent but also from China, Korea, Tibet, Japan, and Persia, symbolizing its global significance.

  • Nalanda spanned over 16 square kilometers.

  • It housed nearly 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers.

  • The university consisted of 10 grand monasteries and over 100 lecture halls.


Dharmaganja Library: The Knowledge Repository


Nalanda’s Dharmaganja Library was one of the largest libraries of ancient times, housing countless manuscripts and texts. It was divided into three sections:


  1. Ratnasagar: General knowledge texts.

  2. Ratnodadhi: Rare manuscripts.

  3. Ratnaranjak: Religious and scientific literature.


The library not only contained Buddhist texts but also literature from diverse regions and disciplines. Unfortunately, during the invasion of Bakhtiyar Khilji, the library was burned, and it is said that the manuscripts smoldered for three months.


Education System and Curriculum


Nalanda’s education system was highly advanced and far ahead of its time. It emphasized not just theoretical knowledge but also practical research, debate, and discussions.

The admission process was extremely rigorous, allowing only the most capable students to enroll.


Testimonies from Foreign Travelers


The fame of Nalanda was such that it attracted scholars and students from China, Japan, Korea, and Persia. Prominent Chinese travelers Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) and Yijing (I-Tsing) documented its grandeur.

  • Xuanzang (7th century): He described Nalanda as the “ocean of knowledge” and praised its teachers, curriculum, and education system.

  • Yijing (7th century): He referred to Nalanda as a “symbol of diversity and profound study.”

Their accounts remain invaluable in understanding the historical and cultural significance of Nalanda.


Decline and Destruction


Nalanda University faced its tragic demise in the 12th century when it was attacked by Bakhtiyar Khilji, a Turkish invader.

  • The university buildings were set ablaze.

  • The Dharmaganja Library was destroyed, erasing centuries of accumulated knowledge.

  • Scholars and students were killed, leading to the collapse of this great center of learning.
